Transcript

Within five seconds, Sonic the Hedgehog is being held at gunpoint by military holding MP5s threatening to kill him. See just at what Costco’s name at the Cartoon Cabal. So much for the fun and games at the Cartoon Cabal. Welcome to the Cartoon Cabal. We’ll blast through the Green Zone hill as fast as we can and then 30 seconds later, get returned to the start. Because that’s mostly how I played Sonic in the front of a KB toy store. Hi, this is Matt here. It’s a paranoid American over there. You a Sonic gamer? Let me give this a shot really quick.

This is gonna go horribly for me. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows, isn’t it? Yeah, but Shadow is it? Duh. I thought, well, no, I had to put. I had to put the Shadow in there because that’s, that’s the radio version. But no, this one’s just Shadow knows. Right? To answer you, I was a Sonic player. I was a Genesis kid, not a Nintendo. Because Genesis did what Nintendo didn’t. Nintendo’t. Okay, I. When I was kid, I mean, I played a lot of Genesis too, I think, just not lots of Sonic.

But Yeah, in the 90s, I was more into Sega. As I get older, I’m like, yeah, the Nintendo stuff is never really up to technical specs, but it’s usually more playable. I feel like. That said, I just play around on an iPad now, so whatever. And the Sonic I played the most was on a Nintendo ds. Did you ever play much with a ds? Sonic on a DS is sacrilege. No, not, not, not regular Sonic, but. So Mario Kart on a ds, to do the nitro, you had to do your thumb on the square wheel or something, and it would just hurt the crap out of your thumb to get the nitro going on Mario Kart.

So I mostly played Sonic Racing on my DS because you would just hold the shoulder button drift, and when you let go, the nitro would go. So I didn’t have to destroy my thumbs playing that one. It wasn’t bad. Yeah, we can. Next series will be a cold video games or something. Sonic Racing 1 is probably one of the better counterparts to the Mario Kart Racing. And yeah, and it has a lot of these characters. I think it has Shadow in it. I didn’t know who the heck Shadow was, man. I mean, I. I played the first few Sonic games, I think through Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, although even Sonic Spinball, which, by the way, is one of the absolute best Genesis games of all time.

Most people don’t give it enough credit. Sonic Spinball was phenomenal. The soundtrack was phenomenal. Anyways, what was that on? I mean Genesis for sure. It might have been a Genesis exclusive. Okay. Sonic Spinball. But they had all these other characters. So my, the characters I remembered were Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and that’s kind of where I dropped off. But if you drop back in like 10 years later, they’ve got all these other characters. They’re interacting with humans. There’s anime series they’ve gone in. So Sonic X is this anime series that went on for I think like 60 or 70 episodes.

It went on for quite a long time. And we just, we’re gonna jump directly into a little bit later into the series. This was episode I can’t remember. 34. 34. It aired on 23 November 2003 in Japan and then it aired a year later in the US in 2004, also in November. So Sonic X was primarily a Japanese show. And then it got dubbed and re edited and sent back to the, the Americans. And I ended up, I mean, as I’m sure you did too. I ended up watching the dubbed one because trying to track down the original would I thought.

And of course I watched the original in Japanese, so no this one. But you know, I, I, it is a thing where just the tone of the voice performance. I might have liked it a little better in Japanese. I just, I don’t, I don’t like the kids sound. I mean, I know Sonic’s not a kid, but he still gets the kind of kid voice acting. And that does drive me up a wall after a while. It’s not my favorite part of anime. If anything, it’s the thing that kept me away from anime for quite a long time is that same voice that you usually complain about.

Yeah. Which you lose when you go into Japanese. I mean then you got to read subtitles and you can’t look at the animation as much. I guess it’s a trade off. But this is not what I think of when I think anime. I don’t think Sonic the Hedgehog because first of all, Sonic the Hedgehog’s aesthetics, I believe were made for an American audience more so than anything else. The original influence included Santa Claus and Michael Jackson. Both of that’s true. Look it up. But it was very much designed for a western audience. And I think they nailed it.

They got like the right character and everything. So it kind of became iconic. But then for this to turn into an anime, I remember jumping on little Robot insects and collecting coins and like, it was kind of cutesy. I put this episode on because I. I just looked up like, what is one of the best episodes to just like jump in head first. And within five seconds, Sonic the Hedgehog is being held at gunpoint by military holding MP5s threatening to kill him. He jumps out of the helicopter into a pool of kids that are skating. He does the bane thing from the Dark Knight Returns or whatever it was called.

And then. And then the episode starts. So I don’t know, man. I was like, this is not what I was expecting from Sonic the Hedgehog at all. This. It felt like a completely alien concept, but I loved it. Yeah, I think this kind of goes into the bin maybe with, you know, more like the Pokemon Digimon sort of vibe. Like a little more kitty. Like, I mean, you know, the series been recommended to us, and I can definitely see where this can be your jam, you know, just dropping. I’m. I’m not a big Sonic guy to start with, so I.

I am more of a Nintendo guy in the end. And, you know, I’m more likely to watch Mario, but Sonic feels like a distant cousin to me, maybe, I guess. I don’t know. If an affinity towards Sonic the Hedgehog gets you all in on this series, you kind of have to be in on all the other plot lines and things going on. And again, since we’re jumping in like halfway through or a third of the way into the series, we don’t get the whole entire backstory. I did watch the first episode and I just felt like there wasn’t enough.

Like, it probably is a slow burn. It probably works itself up. Kind of like Evangelion, right? You can’t just watch the first episode and think that you’re getting it or God help you, you watch like the train episode. So this is not one of those. This is one of the more interesting and it touches on so many different conspiracy topics that it felt like it was a good pick. Yeah, this one’s nice and kinetic. It’s not the. The. The. The dragon filler episode, which is not what we need. People do team seem to really gravitate towards, like, kind of niche Sonic, though, because I’ve heard some people really get into these Sonic role playing games.

Maybe that’s where Shadow first shows up. I’m not sure I’m talking on my butt there. One of my good friends is really obsessed with the Sonic comic book, but the UK version, which is different than the US version. So he’s like, yeah, they did it right in the uk. I wouldn’t even know what doing it right would mean for a Sonic. Well, I don’t either, so. Yeah, again, most of my Sonic is those 30 seconds they’d let you play a KB, right? So I think it’s great, man. I think it’s a great property. Mario needed to be taken down a peg, but it’s.

It’s all Japanese, right? The Japanese control the most popular video game Personas of all time, I think. Or at least they did until Grand Theft Auto. Yeah, but Grand Theft Auto doesn’t have like, specific characters so much. I mean, nothing. Nothing. Like that’s only the latest one. Yeah, but that’s. That’s not in the cultural vernacular, like. Yeah, yeah, you know, he’s not Sonic. What do we. Qbert? Yeah, we’ve mostly forgotten about Cuba, I guess. Pac man still shows up here and there, but he’s not much of a character. Although there have been Pac man animes and maybe we should watch one.

Yeah, there was the Nintendo Power TV show. What was it called? Oh, I know what you’re talking about because. Yeah, like the Brain and it had like the. The. The End Master or something. We’ll have to. We’ pull that one up too. Yeah. And I. I should probably throw out now that we are. Well, this actually is. The Sonic X is fully anime. But having been in Japan and talking to students and stuff, I do tend to call everything anime now because that’s what my students do. So if I do kind of throw out like and call something American and anime, that’s just how, you know, the way I talk has changed here, man.

Everything’s an anime now. This Sonic X does come across as a series that builds on previous episodes. It’s not these little vignettes that other an animations are so jumping in 20 episodes and some change already. But I kind of got a general premise of what this episode’s about. So Sonic has been set up and framed kind of fugitive style. And he’s trying to escape the government because the government is gonna arrest him for treason, which I assume means put to death. That’s usually what the penalty for treason is. So Sonic. They still hang people in Japan, so.

So Sonic is being hunted down by the government. To him, treason, because they think that he has been breaking into things and stealing like mech and military secrets. But really this is all happening from Shadow the Hedgehog, who is different than Sonic the Hedgehog. And my understanding on this is that Sonic the Hedgehog is an organic hedgehog. He’s just a regular hedgehog that happens to be really fast. But that Shadow the hedgehog is essentially a clone or an artificial created being that’s supposed to be superior to Sonic, but he’s kind of new. He’s like a new Homunculus or a new Frankenstein where he’s still figuring out the world a little bit.

That was the premise. That was the idea that I got from watching this. The biggest difference is like, when they’re racing, like, Shadow’s not trying, he’s doing this very graceful, you know, slow gate where Sonic. You can see his little hedgehog legs pumping as fast as they can. Right, right. But I don’t know if he’s necessarily superior because then it gets into the whole, like, well, he’s missing whatever soul that Sonic has because Sonic is organic and he’s this artificial creation. So clearly Sonic’s got to have some sort of benefit to him. There was an animation mistake, which I was actually disappointed with with the mistake because one of the first scenes with Shadow, it looked like he had different color eyes like David Bowie.

Later on the episode’s very clear that he has the same color eye. So I think I just caught an animation mistake. There’s also an Epstein island in this episode. It’s shaped like a guitar and it’s. It’s clearly being attended by a CIA agent. I don’t know anything about Prison Island. My. My thought did go to Alcatraz a little more. I get prison, but it’s shaped like a guitar. But yeah, I guess so. Maybe it’s more of an Alcatraz. It did not. It was not a one on one for Alcatraz though. So. Because I was like, well, what does Rikers island look like? You know, I don’t.

I don’t. Well, this is, this is where they, they hold like P. Diddy. I guess the musicians, they hold them at like a music version of Epstein island, but it’s a prison. Sonic’s not a musician though, is he? He’s probably a musician some episode. And then Shadow also mentions how he was awakened from a state of suspended animation where Demolition Man. I mean, that’s Demolition Man. Well, there’s several things that, like, I kept thinking more modern, you know, Marvel movies because they have that thing, I’m awake, you know, like Captain America’s in the ice. We have all this stuff with the Chaos Control, Chaos Emeralds.

I’m like, well, that’s what every Marvel movie is about from like 2015 and 2019, wasn’t it? Well, and that was the original Premise, though, of the Sonic the Hedgehog games is that you were trying to collect all of these different gems constantly. And I thought this. It was interesting that what Eggman and Shadow the Hedgehog were doing is they were stealing a government mech and it looked like an Ava. It kind of was like, they’re stealing a freaking ava. And that’s what would have been treason. So part of the back of my mind’s thinking is that, are they putting hedgehogs and Avas now to fight the fallen angels? Oh, I assume that one of the.

These would have just psychologically destroyed Sonic. You know, it’s actually his mom. His mom is the. The robot mommy, the hedgehog. Yes. So, I mean, this. This episode’s got so many different themes in it, right? It has this shadow government. It has the weaponization of children. It has this weird memory distortion aspect represented by shadow. It has a moral ambiguity that’s kind of going on on top of all that. And then again, the. I think it’s fascinating about the whole, like, Santa Claus and Michael Jackson. I think that was specifically the shoes. I think Sonic the Hedgehog’s shoes represented Michael Jackson’s shoes because they really liked how Michael Jackson moved.

Oh, I was thinking red, so I was like, that must be the Santa part. Where does Santa come in then? I don’t know, man. This is Japanese interpretation of Western things. How am I supposed to know how you. You take a Santa Claus and you put it into Santa and Sonic the Hedgehog? Because when. When you said that my. This is all a stretch because obviously it doesn’t make sense, but I thought kind of Sonic’s face was a little, kind of like in Jackson territory, whereas the shoes. That’s where I was thinking the Santa Claus. It was the.

The color scheme from Santa was this. They both have to do with the shoes. Right. The red and white contrast of Santa’s suit becomes the red and white contrast in the shoes. And also the shoes have this little, like, buckle stripe that goes over them that was like, very iconic. If you see Michael Jackson and his Moonwalker, which was also a video game, he’s wearing, I believe those same little, like, bootstrap boots. So they do remember playing a lot of that game. So you remember. Yeah, there were Genesis, so there were two versions. There was the arcade version and then there was the home console version.

And between the home console version, there was a Sega and Nintendo, and both of those were different. And the. The home console versions were yet different from the arcade version. But I think Genesis was the closest. Maybe I was mostly playing the arcade version. Now I’m thinking about it. So that’s the superior one, is the. Is the quarter pusher one. Yeah, we all forget that. We did actually spend time in arcades, Stranger things style or whatever. So I can still smell like the metal and the soda and the pizza, like all of that combined. Oh, that’s the putt putt version.

Okay. The putt. What do you mean, the putt putt version? You said the pizza and all that. Because my first thought was the mall arcade, which would definitely have the metal, but maybe not the pizza so much. Where you have pizza in your mall, you have an esabaro. You didn’t have the arcade right next to the. The. The arcade in Gwinnett Mall was somewhat far away from the food court, so maybe that’s why. Yeah, I’m thinking of Atlanta malls. Yeah, I think they generally kept the food courts in the. In the arcades in different places. Maybe for that reason.

Was there ever a Sonic arcade game? There had to have been. There had to be a few. I can’t really remember any major ones, though. Now that you’re bringing it up. I’m not so sure. Yeah, like an actual arcade. Like a quarter pusher arcade game. Yeah, I might. I might. Look, one other character that comes up in this one that I didn’t even know existed is Rogue the Bat, who’s, I guess like the Jessica Rabbit of the Sonic world who’s clearly a honeypot. Like she’s the MK Ultra sex kitten, no questions asked. But she happens to be about.

I mean, I guess that’s. Her name is Rogue the Bat, and she kind of looks like Sonic, just with bat wings and. And boobs and lipstick. Oh, there are a lot of Sonic arcades, by the way. That can’t be right. 1984 is way too. Wait. Oh, these are just all of. Okay. Ufo, segasonic SEGA Sonic. I don’t know what I’m looking at. There was a Sonic game for the SEGA Master System, the one that came before the Genesis. That must have been the. The one I was looking at that. I didn’t. I was like, that’s too early, right? Oh, some of these are like little crappy fake, you know, like the.

What were those called? Where they come in little arcade cabinets and you’d have them in your house and they’d have like garbage games on them. Oh, yeah, like the 99 and ones or whatever. Tiger, tiger. There we go. They make the real tiny ones and they make slightly bigger ones. 99 and 1? Yeah. Everyone always was convincing you that they were having fun playing a tiger. I. I don’t think anyone has ever actually played a tiger and had fun doing it. I remember. Maybe again, dumb kid. But I do remember having the larger one, which was.

It was a Popeye one. And I do remember enjoying that one quite. Quite. But it was like. It like had the actual like little arcade controls and stuff. So it was like a little bit. Okay, okay. I remember. I remember most of those. They were just. There were sort of a. A low five version of Dragon’s Lair, where Dragon’s Lair was just like a quick time event game. You had to hit a button at the right time for the movie to keep playing. That’s kind of what those ended up being, right? Wow. There’s some much more modern looking Popeye games.

Popeye still a thing. People still like Popeye. I don’t think he’s been canceled yet. I’m just talking to like, do like kids know who Popeye is? You know, I’m not so sure. Well, the copyright, I think just lapsed on Popeye. So Popeye just entered public domain this year or last year. So it’s got to be a pornographic Popeye by now. There’s going to be pornographic Popeye. There’s been a horror Popeye that’s already in the works. I can’t remember the name of it. It had a clever name. So I don’t know. I don’t know if there’s enough investment with like any of the actual owners to keep investing in Popeye.

I think now once it turns public domain, there’s not a lot of incentive to keep pushing it. No getting back to Sonic. A couple of things. It is weird watching all the elementary school boys who have like these. This weird movie. Star crush on Sonic. I just thought that was kind of funny. Is that like boy love on Sonic? No, it’s different than that. It’s just like a movie Star crush. It’s like they’re still. They’re too young to have noticed the girls yet, but they have like almost equally, you know, strong feelings about Sonic, which just felt weird.

Just before we move on too far, it. The. That movie is called Popeye the Slayer, man. Oh, yeah. Okay. That is good. So Bluto’s not slaying or Brutus, depending on which version you’re looking at. But no, I don’t think he’s even in it. What? No, that’s an ancient murderer. I think. I think you get the title of the movie. And it probably starts and ends there. And the Rest of it’s like, oh, it’s kind of like what, what? Pooh pooh and blood and honey and sugar and sex and magic. Some of the music cues in this and I don’t know if that’s in the original Japanese or if that’s just like an American version, but there was a lot of music cues that sounded very Ghostbusters in this.

Like. Like the kind of build up to the Ghostbuster song sort of vibes which was kind of a one hit wonder. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Ray Parker Jr. Is the, the notorious one hit wonder. Have you ever seen the Jordan Peele sketch where he’s. Yeah. Parker Jr trying to make other so songs. And then that song itself he’s basically was. Was I want a new Drug. You know, Huey Lewis in the news and just kind of like, oh, we want a song like this. So I kind of just rewrote that song, which is what they asked him to do.

So I can’t follow on that. But we were talking on an earlier episode from a couple weeks ago about the DuckTales and DuckTales theme song being like one of those earworms. I think there was a lot of Sonic songs too that ended up being earworms for all the different zones in the video games. But that it had some of the better music out of all the different Sega games to even come out. I think Sonic had some of the best. Well yeah, it was rocking the 16 bit the best, wasn’t it? Because that’s where. Because you know, eight bit just straight chip tunes can is pretty narrowing.

But Super Nintendo and Genesis both like chrono triggers, like just a legit good soundtrack on almost any metric. I wasn’t prepared to pull it out of my archive somewhere behind me. But I’ve actually got a Genesis driven synth called a Mega FM that basically has. I think it’s got three or four different Genesis chips in it so that you can play poly, you know, polyphonic sort of synths based on actual Genesis sounds. So to say that I, I’m like sort of inspired and influenced by Sega Genesis music would be an understatement. I mean I made a lot of electronic music where people are like, oh, it sounds like you’re making video game music.

I’m like, oh, okay, sure. That said, I tend to, I like 70s gloopiness. I tend to gravitate towards, you know, analog since. Or ones that sound analog, which is a different vibe than the, than the chip tunes. Although the music in here has like nothing to do with any Of. It’s just. It’s anime music, isn’t it? Yeah, it’s like heavy metal for kids. Anime instrumental stuff. Looking through my notes, see what else I got. Oh, the butler guy has a very loud blink. I thought that was kind of weird. It was like very like red and stimpy esque.

Yeah. And I never really figured out why that happened. Overemphasizing body sounds. Yeah, I mean, maybe it’s like a running joke. And I didn’t see episodes one through 33, so that could. That could be why. Seems like it’s pretty easy to distinguish Sonic and Shadow. They are actually different colors. There’s a little more red and shadow. He definitely stands differently. It doesn’t seem like it should be so hard, you know, it’s not like the. Also just a hedgehog. I mean, wouldn’t you see plenty of hedgehogs all the time? So to confuse Sonic with just this one other hedgehog.

What about him? And like the other million hedgehogs on the planet? Well, let’s see. What, what, what anthropomorphic animals do we get in this? We have Sonic, we have the. The bat, Rogue, the bat. Lots of robots. Shadow maybe doesn’t count. Eggman is just a weird man, I think. And correct me if I’m wrong. And then we have Sonic movies, human children that also do not seem to fit in with the other human. Like Eggman’s a human, right? Maybe he’s an alien, I guess. I don’t know. I don’t know. Yeah, yeah. And then there’s the newer movies.

Weird thing to think about. Like Zoomers. Probably know Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik more than, you know. Anything else he’s done. It’s a weird thought. I’m okay with that. I hope he is too. No Ace Ventura, no Mask, no Truman. He’s just. He just stalked a Robotnik. Now I. I don’t know if the mask holds up beyond the generation that saw it. I like the mask. I could still re watch it. But when you do re watch it, it’s not the same. And honestly, talking about comic book inspired, the original mask is actually like really dark and.

Oh yeah, funny. He dies at the end, isn’t he? And his girlfriend gets a mask, I think. Yeah, but he. She deserves it because he’s so horrible. So I’m still waiting for a Son of the Mask reboot with Jamie Kennedy. Have you watched that movie before? I have. I didn’t hate it. I mean, it’s not the greatest show, but. Oh, I hated it because we watched it at lunchtime and I felt depressed for the rest of the day. And that’s from a comedy. My, my father in law rented it for my mother in law because she liked the mask but they didn’t know what they were getting into, you know, so.

So now Sonic, just to cap this off, Sonic is interesting because it’s important enough that when they made the movie enough people were like, I don’t like that. That they decided that they were going to re render the entire movie and it ended up being better. And I can’t think of. Oh yeah, that first Sonic rendering was so weird. It was so surreal looking. And I don’t, I can’t remember a lot of instances where a movie took that type of feedback from like the entire world and incorporated it and fixed something for the better and then released it and were basically rewarded for it.

Yeah. Because the, the other end of that I would say is like the Rise of Skywalker. Let’s listen to all the criticism from the previous Star wars and, and do something about it and just make an abomination. Let’s make a kid suicidal. Well, it’s. In that case, it’s Star Wars. Let’s. Let’s make a, you know, 35 year old guy that lives with his mom suicidal and now he’s a schizophrenic apparently. Right. I recently been working through the Fast and Furious movie. So I do like how in those they just kind of go in and out of prison.

Like they’re going into the convenience store or something. Like, hey, we need to go to prison and talk to this guy. So he give themselves a rest and then break out again. Like, well, I still have Japan. Yeah. I just kind of feel like that’s what Sonic’s kind of up to in this one. You know, just pop in. Right. You want to throw out anything else on the Shadow knows you know something more about the Shadow. I’m a shadow junkie. I listen to the Shadow to go to sleep whenever I’m by myself because no one else appreciates it.

But I love the Shadow. So the, the name of this episode kind of had me sold. Okay. I’ve tried to do that with the Shadow before. The problem is since I don’t want to bug people in my house. In Japanese houses have thin walls. I do it on headphones. And when you’re trying to go to sleep, you don’t really want to have headphones. Yeah, I agree. 100. Yeah. No, but back in the 90s, man, it was basically loveline with Dr. Drew. Or it was coast to coast or it was the shadow. Those were the three things that were putting me to sleep pretty much every single night.

Okay. Yeah, I’m thinking, like, more modern, you know, like, what am I looking for on YouTube? So I have gone looking for. It’s been a while. No, yeah, it’ the blast in the past, man. This is like something like it was probably like even pre, like grandpa listening to radio for some of it. Yeah. But. But no, it’s. You know, if not for the headphone thing, I’d probably do it more often, you know, like when I did live in my own apartment, I’d always play CD play, You know, put something on a CD player, like out loud in my room while going to sleep.

But so that. That’s a luxury I don’t get so much anymore. Too bad. Well, for this one, I guess I’ll just plug one of my other podcasts, which is under the Docks. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go and check it out. We do conspiracy documentary reviews. We do some kind of normie reviews stuff too. We’ll do Black History Month. We do Gay Month. We do all sorts of fun months. So we do. On themes. If you like old conspiracy documentaries or any kind. There weren’t enough podcasts where people were talking about documentaries. There’s plenty of TV shows and movies and.

But I think documentaries are what maybe got me into being a conspiracy theorist to begin with. And that was the original inspiration. So you want to come and find out what type of media radicalized me as a young teen. You can go and check out under the Docks. All right. As for me, some podcasts you might want to look at if you’re listening to this one, go to Films and Filth. That’s also@podcast podcastius.org in that feed, go all the way back to like, geez, was it 2020? And there is a. There are episodes on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and Detective Pikachu there.

So if you’re into these sorts of things. I know Sonic X is a completely, you know, different thing. How dare you? That’s what I’ve talked about in the past. That’s. That’s all I’m all I’m saying. So. Oh, why is he Sonic X, by the way? I never worked that out. I assumed it was like a Malcolm X thing. Like, he didn’t. He didn’t want as like a slave name anymore. Like, he’s part of the. The. He’s. He’s joined the church. Farrakhan’s church or something. Yeah, Nation of Islam. I would actually pin him as a nation of gods on Earth 5 percenter.

Man, if. If the series gets into that, we. We would be missing something. Yeah. Yakub grafting people underground. I feel like that maybe that’s where Shadow came from. He was grafted underground by. By Jakob.
