Alchemical Gnosis: Transmuting Consciousness Through Occult Practices

I’m here in Burbank, California, and I thought I’d take you along for a tour of a museum celebrating paranormal, mysticism, and the occult. The word occult comes from the Latin occultus, meaning clandestine or secret, referring to knowledge of the hidden, and is not inherently evil or negative. Every culture, from Egypt to India to the Norse, preserve teachings about inner truth and unseen forces or dimensions beyond ordinary perception that shape consciousness and reality itself. Esoteric traditions reserved for initiates and veiled in symbolism can be found across countless ancient civilizations that, when properly deciphered, focus on understanding cosmic principles, the nature of the soul, unseen influences on life, and paths to wisdom, self-mastery, and spiritual empowerment.

These traditions emphasize personal transformation, harmony with natural cycles, and growth through direct experience, leading to a true inner divine knowledge or gnosis from within. They were not harmful but tools for enlightenment, which became vilified by those that seek political power. Symbolism that unlocks ancient wisdom became demonized and misunderstood, forcing esoteric knowledge to go underground and disguised as alchemy. In esoteric traditions, alchemy was never about literally transmuting base metals like lead into physical gold. Instead, it symbolized the inner spiritual process of purifying the soul, where base elements such as raw human passions, desires, and lust must be refined through stages of transmutation into the gold of enlightenment, divine awareness, or psychic wholeness.

Ancient mystery schools viewed raw lust and sexual energy as potent creative forces that, when consciously transmuted rather than dissipated, became sublimated into higher spiritual energy, leading to inner union, immortality of the soul, or the philosopher’s stone as a metaphor for perfected consciousness. This interpretation, popularized by figures like Carl Jung, sees alchemical texts circulated by European secret societies as veiled descriptions of psychological processes where integrating shadow aspects yields the radiant spiritual gold of self-realization. Ernst Tristan Kurtizan was a bishop in the Gnostic Catholic Church, Freemason, member of the Ordo Templi Orientist, Kabbalist, and author.

His book, The Terro, the Kabbalistic Method of Inquiry into the Future as the Kidekultism, was published in 1920 and was the first German book about tarot in which he presents the tarot as an ancient esoteric system deeply intertwined with Kabbalah, serving as a profound tool for divination and unlocking the secrets of occultism through structured symbolic interpretations. He reconstructs the 78 tarot carts emphasizing their correspondences with Kabbalistic principles such as the Hebrew or Phoenician alphabet, the tree of life, and numerological patterns while outlining a methodical approach to card layouts for querying the future that integrates hermetic, Gnostic, and mystical traditions without unnecessary adornment.

He claims that the tarot’s origin traced back 21,000 years to the lost civilization of Atlantis, where it was used as a sacred divinatory practice before being preserved and transmitted through ancient Egypt and other mystery schools, ultimately positioning it as the ultimate key to understanding hidden cosmic laws and human destiny. The Kabbalah was introduced into Europe by the Knights Templar who brought it back from the east and infused it into secret societies where it was veiled in alchemical symbolism before it then re-emerged in manuscripts such as the Zohar in the 13th century right as the Templars were being disbanded.

Occult authors such as Madame Bovatsky agreed that the authentic Kabbalah predated Judaism arguing that the Jewish tradition had corrupted an original universal secret doctrine or ancient wisdom religion. Quote, the mysteries of the Jews were identical to those of the pagan Greeks who took them from the Egyptians, who borrowed them in their turn from the Chaldeans, who got them from the Arians, the Atlanteans, and so on. The word alchemy is derived from the and thus came to signify the mysterious Egyptian art or science associated with early chemical and transformative practices. Egyptian esoteric knowledge centered on Hermeticism, which teaches as above so below, as within so without, as universe so the soul, meaning the microcosm or individual, mirrors the macrocosm or universe, and inner states reflect outer reality, a principle from the Emerald Tablet.

In Sumerian and Babylonian traditions, hidden knowledge involved divination, astrology, and incantations. Cuneiform tablets reveal rituals to align with celestial forces in an effort to understand unseen influences on fate, health, and destiny. Magic, a term derived from the Aryan Magi, was integrated into daily life for protection, healing, and insight, empowering individuals through knowledge of hidden patterns in the stars and spirits. Norse esoteric traditions revolved around runes and Sather, a type of shamanistic magic focusing on fate, prophecy, and influencing destiny through trance states, chanting, and spirit communication, often performed by women and usually involving healing.

The term Wicca literally means wise one, but became a justification to burn European women alive for seeking wisdom through nature. Odin sacrificed himself on the Yggdrasil to gain rune wisdom, symbols encoding cosmic forces for divination, protection, and magic. These were paths to profound self-knowledge, foresight, and influence over the unseen through wisdom gained from altered consciousness. Greek mystery schools such as the Eleusinian and Dionysian offered initiation into cycles of death and rebirth for spiritual rebirth and empowerment. In ancient India, Tantra and Vedanta explored hidden energies for Shakti and non-dual consciousness for liberation and self-realization.

These esoteric traditions viewed unseen forces as neutral or benevolent, part of a cosmic web shaping consciousness. Knowledge of them fostered personal growth, confronting the shadow self or ego, aligning with higher truths and achieving empowerment through inner mastery and harmony with the hidden order of existence. Mysticism plays a central role in the occult as a gateway to transcendent experiences where altered states of consciousness induced through practices like meditation, ritual, drugs, or tantra serve as the primary mechanism for piercing the veil between the mundane and esoteric realms. In occult traditions such as Hermeticism, Kabbalah, or Shamanism, these altered states disrupt ordinary perception, allowing practitioners to access unseen worlds, parallel dimensions, or the astral plane, often described as layers of reality beyond the physical senses.

This facilitation of gnosis or direct experiential knowledge of universal truths enables insights and cosmic interconnectedness, divine archetypes, or hidden forces governing existence, empowering the mystic to achieve spiritual enlightenment, magical efficacy, or personal transformation by bridging the conscious mind with the collective unconscious or higher intelligences. The real work of the occult concerns a deeper understanding of yourself, your own consciousness, and the subtle laws that govern your life. It teaches that thought influences form, and that intention carries weight, and that the universe is more interconnected than the physical eye can detect. The occult deals with symbols, archetypes, energies, states of awareness, and the deeper architecture of reality.

It’s not a religion, but a gradient system of learning that gives initiates autonomy and inner sovereignty, how to think instead of what to think, and that terrifies the global power structures that thrive on control and forced regulation. It empowers a person to understand their higher potential, to look inward instead of outward, and therefore their own unrealized influence and impact on the world around them. So the ancient knowledge was suppressed and labeled as dangerous, and was veiled in symbolism that became feared and misunderstood. The goal of all occult traditions teach that the divine is not somewhere up there, but woven into every part of your being, and that scares people who aren’t ready to face themselves.

But for those who are, confronting oneself becomes a doorway. It turns confusion into clarity, chaos into purpose, and life into something far more meaningful than chance or fate. The occult doesn’t demand belief. It demands observation, direct experience, and subjective reflection. It isn’t about escaping reality. It’s about finally understanding it.
