ERC-8004 + x402 AI Agent Registry Explained (ETHEREUM AI NEWS)

And this is possible thanks to an on-chain registry where each agent gets a permanent identity with metadata, reputation scores, and validation records. Then, there’s X402, which solves AI payments once and for all. It’s the HTTP.402 payment required status code, but it’s finally being used for what it was designed for, native web payments, without requiring API keys or accounts. And together, 8004 and X402 create the infrastructure for agents to discover, trust, and pay each other on-chain. So here’s how to add your agent or endpoint to the 8004 registry contract, and how to verify that it works with X402.

First, you’ll click on the green Create button and give your agent a name, description, and image URL. And what’s most important about this registration example is this step here, which is your communication endpoints. We’ll use the Custom tab, and we’ll go over to playground.x402.com and call our Get endpoint to make sure that we get a 200 success message, which should return the JSON object, giving the name of the service, the cost of the service, its network, and its capabilities, as well as some examples. And once we’ve verified that this endpoint works, we can add it and we can name it, as well as give it a version.

Next, we can check the execution endpoint, which should be a post. And because it requires an X402 transaction, it should return cannot get because there was no payment sent with the request. And that’s how X402 works. So now that we verified, we can add our endpoint and name it with a version. And we’re going to the capabilities page, where we could add OASF skills and domains if we have them. But in this case, we’re just going to add some free form tags for search. And now that we have our tags, then we will choose our agents supported trust mechanism, which will be reputation based trust, and we’ll make sure that it has X402 payment support enabled.

And finally, for metadata storage, if you already have the IPFS URL or HTTPS URL, you can use it. Otherwise, just select auto and hit next. And you’ll see a preview of what will be published to the blockchain. But what’s to take note of is this metadata JSON. If this looks good, we can scroll up and connect our wallet, scroll back down and create this transaction. And we’ll see the meta mask pop up here, where we can confirm it.
