Summary
While exploring a trail, I found an old carving that looks like a bird’s head on the side of a mountain, facing a valley. This carving could be seen from the valley, especially if the trees were cleared. It’s believed that ancient tribes, like the Cherokee, used such markings to guide their way or indicate important locations. Despite its age and being covered in debris, the carving is still visible and is one of the most interesting finds I’ve made.Transcript
Jump down here. Hope I don’t run into any copperheads. It’s been carved, without a doubt. You can see it’s super old. You can see the design in it. It almost looks like a beak. From what I can tell, it looks like a bird’s head. And there’s all kinds of debris covering it. There’s very, very, very old growth on it. And the best that I can tell here, it definitely looks like a bird’s head facing toward the east. This rock face is facing the south, so anyone coming up from the south would see this if they looked up, which is very interesting because whenever old Indian tribes and everything else used to move through this exact area, the Cherokee, there would be signs left like this markings to let others know where things are.
They also left markings like this around the silver mines and things like that, but it’s definitely carved out in nature, and this has got to be one of the wildest finds I’ve ever found out here in terms of something so old carved into the rock. Again, all the way from the bottom here, all the way up and around. It’s not only carved, but it’s like double carved. There’s like a whole layer here that comes down to a point in two different spots and it goes back out. It’s definitely designed. And the closest thing that I can match it to, again, is like a bird’s head, is what it reminds me of.
Yeah, definitely a carving, definitely super old. I don’t see any others around. I’ve searched this rock face. I haven’t found anything else thus far, but pretty crazy to find what looks to be an ancient carving, very, very old carving that just so happens to be in a spot where it could be seen from the entire valley below, anybody traveling. So if you guys come across any things like this, let me know. It’s always interesting. Probably never get the answer on who carved it and how old it is, but pretty cool. I’ll continue the search. Just goes to show you never know what you’re going to find out there.
