A group led by Alfred Rosenberg, known as ERR, stole over 650,000 artworks, mainly from Jewish collections, during the Nazi era. Many of these artworks, including sculptures and paintings, are still missing today. Some of these stolen pieces are unknowingly held in private collections, causing issues when they are identified and the original owners want them back.

They even had a whole team I don’t even know how to pronounce this in German in German, but it’s the initials is ERR and it was led by Alfred Rosenberg and they that whole entire group was responsible for seizing and stealing artwork and and They were targeting specifically Jewish own collections So they stole a lot from the Rothschilds and as I was looking into this that so they were they were targeted a lot of the other Jewish families were targeted and They took just from that group alone.

They took over 650,000 different works of art So But it was like millions of stuff that they took millions of dollars Stuff right? No 5 million Cultural objects were stolen pieces of art. Oh, yeah, but but like a lot actual artwork like actual paintings was about 650,000 but then there’s all this other stuff that they were trying to steal to not just artwork but artifacts Could be like, you know Sculpture could yeah sculptures was another really big thing that they were taking to antiquities all that kind of stuff and And Hitler Kept it all and and in a secret cave It was like massive amount of artwork in this salt mine that he stored everything and that’s that’s what the monuments men The paintings salt deteriorates everything it’s around that’s what I thought was kind of weird I guess it depends if it’s if it’s not wet if it’s dry salt Well, it’d have to be like a well, no dry dryness Basically the what the museum conditions are for paintings especially is that there’s a certain humidity to keep the paintings from Drying up and all this stuff.

So there must have just been like the perfect conditions in the salt mine But salt generally speaking makes everything erode much faster Like if you live near the ocean your house will erode much faster because of the high amounts of salt in the air So that’s right But but I think it’s because it’s evaporating in the water So like from the water, right? So if by the ocean, it’s like it’s very moist So the air is moist because of the water and then there’s so I know I know I get that but then I was just saying about the humidity the humidity would have to be at a certain level which was cold enough for Example, you know at which which in this case it probably was this is in Austria So and there was different caves that they had it in but it was in salt mines I mean, this is just yeah, so I don’t really know for specifically how they were storing these but um There’s still many pieces that are missing to this day and some of them Yeah, and this is kind of wild for the art world This is what I started reading into this that like Sotheby’s and everything will make sure that so so if they receive a piece of artwork that they’ll kind of go through the process of figuring out if it was stolen or not or whatever and There’s still artwork in people’s collections that are actually were originally stolen by the Nazis So it’s still there There’s many many pieces.

I can imagine some opportunists being like hey, these are already stolen Let’s just take them for ourselves and not not claim. Yeah, I mean there could be I mean, there’s probably both people don’t know that It was told, you know, cuz if it’s like resold, you know Someone has it and then they resell it sell it again in like a private auction or something, you know You don’t really know if it’s stolen or not So that’s that’s why Things are so like things that are they know and then that actually did happen there was I can’t remember which which piece it was but they this family had a Artwork that they were trying to sell and then lo and behold They found out that it was stolen by the Nazis and the original owner wanted it back So I think they worked out some kind of like agreement financial wise, you know It’s like well, you know, we paid for it, too And you know, we didn’t know it was stolen so right it’s kind of wild all this stuff and But in that that gets into the the Ghent altar piece, you know What we were kind of talking about a little bit about last time But that’s what um Hitler really wanted that Again to have to be I mean specifically one one panel.

Yeah the panel that’s Gone now It’s it’s the just judges the it had the the map They alleged that it had a map to the Holy Grail and that painting Yes Yeah on the on the night of In 1934 That’s when it was taken And the whole thing has been throughout history It’s been it’s been Stolen multiple times and brought back in fact But It’s not easy to take it the whole thing weighs about two times I guess because of the frames that they’re in and it has it was one of the most desired our artwork by Hitler and Hitler even got it restored I guess Yeah, the face of the lamb has been repainted multiple times That’s what people are saying to that original the original face looked more almost like more human, which was kind of weird but Very strange, but yeah Hitler believed through his I Guess the because you know he had like the Vril society that was composed of a lot of these women That were into the paranormal and doing all the stuff and supposedly were like psychics Connecting with other beings and interdimensional beings and aliens and all kinds of stuff I guess they were told that that contained a map to the Holy Grail and that’s That that’s rumored why Hitler specifically went after that and he was told specifically it was that Peace in the pain.

Yeah, they had it. So is it still missing to this day? Yes, it is Yeah, it’s in someone’s private collection somewhere I thought it was I thought it was found and then or then what’s there now? Is it they they have a replacement painting so that people can still see what it kind of would have looked like But it’s not the original one. That is wild.
