We turn now to that remarkable scientific breakthrough. 13,000 years after the last dire wolf walked the earth, scientists say they’ve now brought them back. Here’s our chief national correspondent back up and with the video tonight. Tonight a howl 13,000 years in the making. In a first for science, biotech company Colossal Biosciences says it brought the extinct dire wolf back to life. A species that hasn’t walked the earth since the Stone Age.

The dire wolf is the first extinct species. Well known from HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones, ABC News given exclusive access into Colossal’s lab in Dallas where scientists are using genes from gray wolves to create dire wolves. We’ve taken a gray wolf genome, a gray wolf cell, which is already genetically 99.5% identical to dire wolves and we’ve edited those cells at multiple places in its DNA sequence to contain the dire wolf version of the DNA. That animal looks like a dire wolf, it will behave like a dire wolf, and it is a dire wolf.

Scientists at Rockefeller University sought to investigate how the Nova one gene which plays a role in brain function affects vocal communication. This gene exists across many species but in humans it contains a single amino acid difference a tiny mutation that might have had profound evolutionary consequences. When mouse pups carrying the humanized Nova one variant called for their mothers their squeaks were higher pitched and structurally different from their wild type counterparts.

Researchers categorized mouse vocalizations into four distinct letters S, D, U, and M. In genetically modified mice some of these letters shifted suggesting that the human N, O, V, A, one gene altered the way they communicated from birth. As they matured these modified mice displayed even more striking differences. Male mice spoke differently when courting females producing more complex high frequency calls compared to normal mice. This suggests that even subtle genetic changes could impact vocal behaviors that influence social interaction and survival. This drought tolerant corn requires 20% less water to grow. It’s genetically altered. It’s genetically altered with proteins found in decomposing soil organic matter. It can take off water reserves from other places within the plant in an effort to keep that process going. This minimizes a lot of risk. It makes the corn plant more efficient and also maintains its productivity. This drought tolerant corn comes at a time of need. It’s been dry since 2012 but this year farmers will use this as a tool to produce a proven yield. A more dependable crop that saves water and saves money for everyone.

We can maintain production levels and if we maintain production levels to meet that demand that will help minimize any cost from a grocery standpoint. In China they’re waging war on the weather. A drought so severe they’re firing rockets into the sky to make it rain. The practice is known as cloud seeding. Drones and rockets are used to sow silver iodide into the clouds. The substance has a similar structure to ice and changes the clouds structure to increase the chance of rain. After more than two months of extreme heat it is desperately needed.
