Summary

➡ Every year, thousands of Orthodox Christians gather at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem for the Miracle of Holy Fire, a ceremony where a flame is said to appear from Jesus’ tomb and light candles, symbolizing Jesus’ resurrection. This tradition, which has been recorded for over a thousand years, is seen as a divine sign and a supernatural show of faith. However, there are debates about the authenticity of the miracle, with some suggesting it’s not supernatural but done using an oil lamp. Despite these doubts, the ceremony continues to be a significant event for the Orthodox Church.

Videos are circulating of what’s called the Miracle of Holy Fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. First let’s look at what this event is, then we’ll look into the claimed miraculous component of the Holy Fire, as well as another amazing discovery that just happened at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. On April 19th, 2025, thousands of Orthodox Christians gathered at Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre to partake in the revered Holy Fire ceremony, a tradition symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the Greek Orthodox Patriarch emerged from the Edicule with candles lit by the miraculous flame, the sacred light quickly spread among the faithful.

This event, which takes place every year, isn’t just a Greek Orthodox tradition where they light candles to celebrate Easter. What’s most interesting about this is that they claim that Jesus himself comes down and supernaturally lights the first fire. The Miracle of the Holy Fire is an ancient and mysterious event that takes place every year on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Just before Orthodox Easter, a blue flame is said to spontaneously emerge from the Tomb of Christ, igniting candles held by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, without any visible earthly source of fire.

Witnesses report the flame behaves strangely at first, not burning skin or hair, and is passed from candle to candle among thousands of pilgrims who gather in awe. The ritual, shrouded in secrecy and centuries of tradition, is seen by many as a divine sign of Christ’s resurrection and a supernatural affirmation of faith. Here’s a little bit of the history of the Holy Fire before we look into the validity of the event. The Miracle of the Holy Fire has been documented for over a millennium, with some of the earliest accounts appearing in the 4th century from Eusebius of Cassarea, though the first detailed description is attributed to the Pilgrim Bernard the Monk in 870 AD.

By the 11th century, the event had become a well-known and regular tradition within the Orthodox Church. Historical records revealed that even during Muslim rule, the Miracle was acknowledged and protected, most notably in 1579, when a dramatic account describes how the Holy Fire miraculously emerged from a column outside the church after Muslim authorities denied Orthodox clergy entry. The column, cracked by the fire according to tradition, still stands today as a silent witness. Crusaders, Byzantine emperors, and Arab historians have all recorded the event over the centuries, lending the Holy Fire both religious reverence and geopolitical intrigue.

Despite decades over its authenticity, the ritual continues to be observed annually, with thousands gathering as the Greek Orthodox Patriarch enters the sealed tomb alone to receive what is believed to be a divine flame. Now let’s look into the validity of the Holy Fire. What we know is that the Almighty God is supernatural and all-powerful in every way. All throughout history, the supernatural hand of God can be seen. When accepting and following Jesus, we see His supernatural work in our lives, and there’s no reason to believe that the supernatural gifts and power of God has stopped for any reason.

If God wanted to come down and light a fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, He absolutely could. Personally though, I do find it a little suspicious that the initial flame, the actual supernatural event here, has to be done by someone who goes into a secret room all by themselves where no one else can witness this event. Thinking back to a somewhat similar account of God using fire, when the Lord was leading the Israelites by a pillar of fire by night, it was no secret. God’s power was on full display for all to see.

Similarly, when Elijah called down fire from God in his challenge to the prophets of Baal, not only was that done for everyone to see, but the altar was soaked with water beforehand to prove this fire was supernaturally sent from God. I found a video of an Armenian Orthodox priest who actually was one of the people who lit the fire on at least one occasion and he said on camera that the event was not supernatural but done using an oil lamp. Apparently, at the time of that interview, there were major disagreements between the Armenian and Greek churches and some people say he said that to try to make the Greek church, the man who stepped in to cut off the video, look bad.

I want to make it really clear, God is a supernatural God. He could at ease light a fire in this church and cause this type of supernatural event to take place. But in regards to this actual event, I would say pray about it, see where the Lord leads you For me, with all the evidence I see, I would need to see a little more evidence to actually know for sure that God is lighting the initial flame. This kind of reminds me of the people in Jesus’s time who demanded that he would do a miracle before they believe.

Jesus had all the power to do anything he wanted, but God is not subject to us in order to work miraculously. God does what he does and we choose to believe in him no matter what we see or believe because he is the truth. I’ll touch more on that in just a moment with a few Bible verses, but first the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is also in the news recently for a pretty cool discovery that was just made there. First, for those who don’t know, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, it’s traditionally believed by many to be the site of Jesus’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.

The church there, which is also known as the Church of the Resurrection, dates back to the 4th century and serves as the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The new discoveries here at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre happened during a recent restoration around the tomb of Jesus. That’s when excavators dug below the original level of the 4th century church. One of their discoveries here at the church validates the gospel account in the book of John. That described Calvary and the site of Jesus’ burial as being in the middle of a garden.

During the excavations, we noticed how the large quarry, as it was gradually abandoned, was used for burials according to Jewish custom, so there were rooms dug into the rock. At the same time, some areas had terraces made with dry stone walls, and within these small spaces we found traces of cultivation, paleobotanical analyses of pollen that revealed traces of cultivation. This data somehow echoes the Gospel of John, which speaks of vegetable gardens and gardens in the area of the venerated tomb and Calvary. God is all-powerful and desiring to see a sign from God because you love him and believe in him is an uninherently bad thing.

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover during the feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs which he did. We know God’s miracle power has followed his people all through the ages and still continues on to this very day. God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. But we don’t follow Jesus just for the signs and wonders that he can do for us. Jesus answered them and said, Most assuredly I say to you, you seek me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.

We followed Jesus because he is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. But Simon Peter answered him, Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. The miracle of Holy Fire isn’t where we find our faith, we find our faith in the Almighty God who is a consuming fire. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

For our God is a consuming fire. Above all the signs and wonders and desiring to see the supernatural hand of God, what God truly loves and desires from us is for us to have faith in him and him alone above everything else because he alone is the one and only Almighty God, the Savior of the world. Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. [tr:trw].
