Why? Because you’re afraid of what they might think. You’re afraid they’ll call you too much. You’re afraid they’ll say you’ve changed. But let’s be real. Some of those same people you’re afraid to offend. They don’t want to see you win. They don’t want you to surpass them. In fact, they’d be more comfortable watching you stay small than seeing you fully step into what God has called you to build. You’re sacrificing your destiny at the altar of their comfort. Nehemiah didn’t do that. When God gave Nehemiah the assignment to rebuild the wall, people came out of nowhere trying to stop him.
They lied on him. They tried to distract him. They made false accusations, hoping he’d abandoned the very work God had called him to do. But Nehemiah didn’t stop. He didn’t come down from the wall. He didn’t explain himself. He didn’t seek their validation. And neither should you. The assignment on your life doesn’t come with a permission slip from people who are secretly intimidated by your obedience. You’re not here to impress them. You’re here to obey God. And if your heart is right, if your motives are pure, then choosing to stay focused on God’s instruction isn’t pride.
It’s courage. Stop waiting for people to clap for what they don’t understand. Stop holding yourself hostage to their assumptions. You’re not arrogant. You’re appointed. And this next move you make, make it in faith. Build the wall anyway. Stay on your assignment. Let them talk. Just don’t let them stop you. When you are walking in divine obedience, don’t be surprised by the lengths people will go to in order to distract, discredit, or derail you. Nehemiah’s story is a powerful reminder of this. The opposition wasn’t just verbal mockery or slander. They went as far as sending a false prophet to prophesy against him.
Yes, someone pretending to speak for God was used to try to scare Nehemiah away from the very assignment God had given him. That’s how serious the warfare can get when you’re truly on divine assignment. The enemy doesn’t just come through obvious attacks. He will use spiritual language, familiar voices, even religious figures to twist truth and stir confusion. They tried everything to get Nehemiah to stop building that wall. They lied on him. They gossiped. They sent threats. They judged him, but none of it worked. Nehemiah knew his lane. He knew who sent him and he knew what he was building was bigger than their opinions.
The moment he completed that wall, everyone, even those who doubted him, knew God was with him. The very people who tried to stop him had to stand back and acknowledge that his success wasn’t luck or pride or stubbornness. It was divine favor. And yet, look at what he endured on the way there. People will try to use spiritual manipulation to convince you you’re out of line when really you’re walking in complete obedience. They will call your confidence pride. They’ll call your clarity rebellion. They’ll try to stir fear and insecurity in you through false narratives, even using God’s name in vain to do it.
But like Nehemiah, you must not budge. You’re not called to appease people’s comfort. You’re called to complete what God gave you to build. And no amount of accusations, slander, or fake prophecy can cancel what God has ordained. You’ll know it’s God’s lane when it comes with peace, direction, and alignment, even when opposition surrounds you. So keep building. Let the walls rise, let your obedience speak for itself, and let every lie fall to the ground powerless while God confirms through your fruit that his hand has been on you the whole time. When you’re walking in your divine assignment, people will talk.
They will judge, mock, and ridicule you, especially in the moment. And not because you’re doing something wrong, but because they simply don’t understand what God has called you to do. They don’t see the full picture. They don’t carry your burden. They haven’t received your instructions. But here’s the truth. It’s not their job to understand. So many of you are hesitating, shrinking back, questioning your next move, not because God hasn’t spoken, but because people around you don’t get it. And their lack of understanding has begun to weigh on you. You’ve been wondering, maybe they’re right.
Maybe I’m doing too much. Maybe I should slow down or tone it down so I don’t look crazy. Now let me remind you, their understanding does not determine your outcome. When God gives you an assignment, he gives it to you, not to your friends, not to your co-workers, not to the people watching from the sidelines. The instructions came to your spirit because the vision was placed in your heart. That means you are accountable to God, not to their opinions. Think about Nehemiah again. While he was building the wall, people talked, they mocked, they lied, they sent distractions.
Why? Because they didn’t understand the weight of what he was building or who sent him to build it. But Nehemiah didn’t wait for them to get it. He didn’t pause to explain. He didn’t stop to gather approval. He kept building. And when the wall was done, the same people who mocked him had no choice but to admit, surely God was with him. That’s how it will be for you. They may not understand your obedience in the moment. They may talk while you’re building. But when it’s finished, when the fruit begins to show, they will know.
And even if they never do, it doesn’t matter. You’re not building for their validation. You’re building because heaven assigned it to you. So release the need to be understood. Let go of waiting for permission and keep your eyes fixed on the one who called you. Because what they mock today, they’ll marvel at tomorrow. Keep building anyway. You’ve been shrinking, silencing yourself, holding your power in your pocket, not because you don’t believe in your purpose, but because you’re trying not to make them uncomfortable. You’re trying not to stir up their insecurities, not to validate the lies they’ve told about you.
And in doing so, you’ve started to dim the very light God asked you to carry. Let’s be honest. It’s not humility. It’s fear. You’re holding back to avoid confrontation. You’re playing small to keep the peace. You’re slowing down your obedience, just so they don’t feel exposed by your courage. But here’s the truth you’ve been avoiding. When you hold yourself back to protect someone else’s comfort, you’re putting them above what God has told you to do. And that’s not obedience. That’s idolatry. You weren’t called to be palatable. You weren’t anointed to blend in.
The instructions God gave you weren’t meant to keep you hidden. They were meant to set things in motion. And now you’re delaying your own growth, your own freedom, your own impact, all because you’re trying to tiptoe around people who were never meant to validate your assignment in the first place. Let’s call it what it is. They’ve lied on you. They’ve painted false pictures of who you are. And instead of standing tall in the truth of what God has said, you’ve been trying to prove them wrong by staying quiet. But listen, your silence doesn’t protect you.
It just gives their narrative more room to breathe. You do not owe anyone the comfort of your smallness. And you certainly don’t owe anyone the sacrifice of your calling, just so they can feel safe in their stagnancy. God didn’t bring you this far to fit in. He brought you this far to break out. So it’s time, time to stop validating their lies by dimming your light. Time to stop giving them authority over your movement. Time to stop trading obedience for approval. Let their discomfort rise if it must. But you, you rise higher. Because when you prioritize people over purpose, you lose both.
But when you choose God above all, everything shifts in your favor. Step out, let it be uncomfortable. Just don’t let it keep you bound. [tr:trw].
