Scientists are making exciting progress in understanding dark matter, the mysterious substance that makes up a large portion of our universe. A team of researchers led by Keir Rogers from the University of Toronto has been studying the distribution of matter in the cosmos to gain insights into dark matter. Instead of directly searching for particles called “axions,” they focused on the clumpiness of the universe.
Axions, according to quantum mechanics, are ultra-light particles that behave in a wave-like manner. They have wavelengths that can be larger than entire galaxies, which affects the formation and distribution of dark matter. The researchers found that cosmic matter is more evenly spread out than expected, and they theorize that axions may play a role in smoothing out the universe. If their theory is confirmed through further observations and experiments, it would be a significant discovery and provide an explanation for why the universe appears less clumpy.
To understand the effect of dark matter on regular matter over time, the team analyzed the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is leftover light from the Big Bang. They also studied galaxy distribution using data from surveys such as the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). By comparing ancient and modern distributions of matter, they discovered that the distribution of galaxies reflects the behavior of dark matter under gravitational forces. Computer simulations of a universe with axion-based dark matter closely matched the actual observations of the CMB and galaxy distribution. While more observations are needed to confirm that axions are indeed dark matter, these findings provide strong implications for their role in understanding the universe. Conducting large-scale surveys of galaxies will be crucial in further exploring dark matter and its properties. The future opening of the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile may contribute significantly to these efforts by providing direct observations of dark matter through gravitational lensing.
