➡ This summary is about a podcast episode discussing a documentary called “Operation Flagrant Foul”. The documentary explores the story of Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee, who was involved in a scandal about possibly fixing games. The hosts discuss how the culture of the NBA and the role of referees can influence the outcome of games, and how this might be seen as a form of gambling or manipulation. They also debate whether this is considered fixing or scripting games, and how personal relationships between referees and players or coaches can impact the game.
➡ This text discusses a scandal involving an NBA referee, Tim Donaghy, who was involved in betting on games. He was connected with a man named Batista, who had ties to the mob. The FBI got involved when they noticed suspicious activity between Batista and the mob. All parties involved ended up turning on each other when questioned by the FBI.
➡ The text discusses a conspiracy theory in the NBA, where games are allegedly manipulated to favor certain teams and extend series for financial gain. It focuses on Tim Donaghy, a referee who was accused of betting on games and influencing outcomes. The text suggests that Donaghy was made a scapegoat by the NBA to protect its image and prevent further investigation into the league’s practices. It also hints that Donaghy and others involved may have profited more than publicly known from these activities.
➡ This text discusses a documentary that exposes the corruption and game-fixing in the NBA. It reveals how referees can manipulate the outcome of games by making certain calls, which can significantly impact the final score. The documentary suggests that this manipulation is not only accepted but encouraged by the NBA to ensure popular teams and players succeed. However, the text criticizes the documentary for leaving out certain details and not fully exploring the topic.
➡ This text seems to be a mix of song lyrics and thoughts, encouraging the reader to buy something from a paranoid American. And there’s no more any bad things going on in the NBA. Under the docks. Under the docks. Under the docks, yeah, under the docks. Ahoy, mateys. This is under the Docks with Paranoid American and Sean Criss charting through treacherous waves of documentaries. To let you know if they sink or swim, visit paranoidamerican.com and kill them birds.com and don’t forget to, like, subscribe and share, share, share the show. Today we’re getting real conspiratorial, Operation Flagrant Foul. I bet you a lot of people don’t know about that operation. You might know about Operation Paperclip or Operation Mockingbird, but have you heard of Operation Flagrant Foul? I have, yeah, and I think it’s Project Paper Clip, But Operation MK Ultra, we’re not going to get too much in the weeds.

But I do want to say conspiratorially, anytime someone is like, oh, you know sports, they’re all rigged, man. Like, there’s. I don’t think any of that’s real. And it’s easy to dismiss that because you’re like, there’s no way. It’s too big of an operation. There’s too much money at stake. There’s too many moving factors. But alas, you forget that how much money is generated from this thing. So it would be the number one attraction. And with this, this particular documentary we get to see not only is it 100% fake and rigged and staged, but how easy it was to do and how easy it probably still is to do because it all got swept under the rug.

We’re going through another episode of Untold, which is called Operation Flagrant Foul, a 2022 film directed by David Terry Fine. This episode centered around Tim Donaghy, an NBA referee, and the controversy of was he fixing games? Was he, what was he doing? And you get a good perspective from all parties of what you may think happened. Plotting the course in this film. Like I said earlier, they’re following Tim Donaghy, an NBA referee, and they kind of go through the timeline of when he started being an NBA ref. And it is important. Like, sometimes the context of, like, them telling their early life doesn’t have anything to do with it, but when they talk about the early NBA career and how he got into it, it’s really telling.

And you need to hold some of this information in, in my opinion, for later on. We’re like, oh, that makes sense now. But he talks about, like, in 94, getting into the NBA and wanting to really, like, this was his dream. He loved basketball. And wanted. He. It’s a $250,000 a year job, which I was like, dang, man, that’s incredible, man. All they have to do is be able to run up the court and be like, foul. Like, you know what I mean? That’s like 80s 90s pay, too. We’re not even talking 2020. And yeah, you’re right.

I didn’t even think of that. That with inflation, you’re probably getting a cool meal, right? If you’re one of the top referees, you’re getting a couple meal. Well, he describes his early NBA career as, like, getting shocked into. Like, I thought we did everything by the rule book. Like, I thought the rule book is what we followed. And really quickly, he understands that that’s not how this works. There’s a. A scene where he talks about how they were emphasizing on a spin move, that the NBA was like, we wanna. We wanna shut down the spin move.

So call it. Every time you see it, call it. And he’s like, all right, yeah, I’m gonna do what they. You say, you want me to call this? You’re changing some of the rules. He calls it. Well, Phil Jackson goes, hey, man, what are you doing? Calling it. And he’s like, the NBA wants me to call this. He’s like, yeah, they want you to call that. Not on this guy. The guy being Michael Jordan, the face of the NBA. So he gets a quick left. This is like, one of his first two years where he’s like, yeah, I got a real fast lesson in life of, like, I can call fouls on some people, and I cannot call fouls on other people.

And that is already bred into the culture of NBA refs. This almost reminds me a little bit. I don’t have. I’m not gonna have a direct analogy, but, like, in boxing, the. The ref is also supposed to be there to, like, break it up in case something’s going really foul. But if you got a ref that actually cares about the health of, you know, one of the people that’s getting beat up, they’ll lose their job if they actually stop it before that, like, nice big jab and, like, the blood splurts out. Or like, what, like, before that thing actually happens, if you legitimately stop it, because that’s the entertainment value, right? So he.

He learns really quickly that you’re part of this entertainment thing. Like, you have a role to play. Like, yeah, we’re playing the game. But also, don’t interrupt the star actor while he’s going off script. Like, just let him Go off script, because he’s the one that’s bringing these people and put them in the seats. And it’s not you from there. They kind of. That’s when they start getting into, like, the gambling aspect of it. And they go like, it was small, right? Him and his friend, where his one buddy was obviously gambling. And this is crazy, too, because he talks about how you’re not supposed to gamble at all as a referee, that nothing, no casino, no going to the track, nothing.

But then he’s like every NBA referee pretty much, or at least a good chunk of them go to these casinos. When we’re going around the country, like, it’s. It’s a thing. It’s probably a known thing. I’m sure we even seen, like, in the Last Dance where Jordan’s trying to gamble any type of way he can, right? So I’m sure that these refs also have some competitiveness in them being around these athletes. Probably be one of the best refs and. And, you know, everybody wants to be the best in their field. But I think that kind of foreshadows it where he’s like, look, this is a thing.

People are gambling. We would bet on games. Like, we’d be like, hey, I bet you 20 bucks this guy scores this much points. I bet you 50 that that this guy gets teed up first. They even started betting on, like, which ref would call the first foul, right? Like, hey, I bet you, blah, blah, blah, such and such, Donaghy’s gonna go call the first foul. And they would have small bets. Then his friend had asked him, hey, is growing up. And he was asking about some games, and he’s like, he had insider information. He talks about it.

And then. So this made me somewhat believed him a little bit, because I’m like, that makes sense, right? Like, I’m not saying he didn’t fix it, because this is the controversy throughout the film is, did he fix the games or did he not fix the games? Some people, like, claim that he’s like, he absolutely fixed the games. And it’s like. But I think he sheds a better light onto the reason being is, you know how right now, the last two years, we even did an episode, I think, with White Rabbit before about the NFL. There’s this thing going around that everything’s scripted, and I think that kind of taints what’s going on because it’s not necessarily scripted.

But, yes, there’s people that are trying to change the outcome, and this is how it’s done. So he goes, he. I Know, such and such referee got into with AI. Allen Iverson a couple games ago. And he’s going to go on. He’s going to. He’s going to be on him right there. There was an incident where Allen Iverson pushed one of the referees. He didn’t get suspended. They took it personally. And they’re like, we’re going to call carryover. So carryovers, when you are dribbling and you turn your hand upside down and the ball’s up, they were like, we’re.

We know he does it. We’re going to continuously call it. And they called it and called it and called it to the point of where everybody’s like, hey, this is kind of obvious, man. You know? And now is that fixing the game or is that just being like cops, right? Where you’re like, alcohol? That’s fixing the game, bro. That’s the. The scene where, like, you put the thumb on the scale while the guy’s, like, weighing your, you know, your food out or whatever to like, make it lesser. You know what I mean? Like, like you are intentionally manipulating the game in a certain way that you know it’s going to go a certain way.

Yeah, I do agree with that, but I think more fixed and scripted. Right? That’s what I mean. I meant I kind of mixed up my tomato. Yeah, I guess, because I think scripted is more like where they’re like, oh, this is exactly what’s going to happen. It’s like, no. Well, there’s their human element. Like, it might not happen like this today because Timmy’s not having a good day with mo cheeks to coach, he hates him. Right. So he’s going to. He’s going to make sure anything he has to say, he’s kicking him out. It becomes that, like, authoritarian.

Right? Like, now you have the power. You are the kid that was getting bullied in high school, and now you’re a cop. Right? It’s like, I couldn’t make it to my college. I’m sure all these rest play basketball. They’re like, I couldn’t make it on college. I couldn’t make it to the NBA. But I can control this. And I. If I can’t get a ring, I can make sure you don’t get one. Yes. That’s kind of like the. The sense I get that there’s like this pettiness. Right. Like for certain players. And there’s certain players where they’re like, ah, I like Michael.

And I wouldn’t be surprised. They don’t go into detail on this. But I wouldn’t be surprised if players are like, hey, man, I’m gonna take care of you, bro. Like, you know what I mean? Hey, your family’s going to Hawaii. I got these free tickets. It’s. We’re going to the NBA Finals, man. Like, make sure that happens, right? I’m sure that they smoosh up to some of these referees just as they get into beast with them. So he’s making these bets and him and his buddy, and he’s like. They’re like, yeah, his buddy is like a nickel.

The. The loan shark. Batista. Yeah, Batista, which is a wrestler name, too. Like, which is funny to me. I kept hearing that through the whole time. Batista is this, like, not mob guy, like, kind of like a fake, cheap mob guy, but just know some mob guys, it seems like, and he’s, like, intertwined and makes them money. He’s like, hey, man, these guys, like, usually, like a 500 better. Now he’s like, betting a thousand and betting 2,000. He’s like, this is. And he’s winning. He’s like, what’s going on? Finds out that, like, oh, his friend is an NBA referee.

He’s like, I want in on the action. And this is where the stories kind of collide. There’s an infamous meeting at a Marriott where everybody says different things. So Batista was like, yeah, I told Donaghy, hey, let’s. Let’s work on this. Let’s get the bets. Let’s both make money. Give me your picks. He’s like, if you pick wrong, you don’t pay nothing, right? You don’t lose anything, you know, and I’ll give you a couple grand for each pick you get, right? But Tim Donaghe. And he said, tim. Tim’s all aboard on it. But Donaghy’s version of the story is, like, he threatened me, like, hey, you either do this, or, like, I’m going to be showing up to your family’s house, and this and that, like, is going to happen.

And that’s where you don’t really know. And then there’s this other guy, Tommy, that’s involved that kind of is the middleman to meet both of them. And you see he’s getting interviewed, and then they’re asking him a question about it, and he’s like, can we stop the camera for a minute? So I’m not sure what’s going on in that level. There’s a. That three ring that they don’t like. So there’s something he didn’t want said that must have got cut out. And he must have, like, been like, don’t put that in the film or why. Yeah, they’re all, all three of them are lying for various reasons.

And I think that they’ve all done their time and they all pled to certain charges, and now they don’t want to drum up new charges that would open all that can of worms back up again. You can tell all three of them are dirty as hell, but they’ve. They, in their minds, they’ve done their time for this, so they don’t want double jeopardy to go out the window. Yeah, I totally agree that they, they. They’re just going like, he’s the scumbag. I’m actually not that bad. Right. Like, it seems like they’re playing their case and trying to put the public perception of, like, you know, it’s kind of Tim Donaghy is the piece of crap, and Donaghy is trying to put, like, Batista in them.

They’re. They’re bad, evil guys that were gonna kill Donaghy was. Was like, only making like five grand a game. Meanwhile, the mobsters betting two mil a game. I feel like there is. The numbers weren’t really adding up when they got into that. Like, I could tell that they were making real money. Right. Because the, the Batista guy, he starts talking about, yeah, you got you like your Knicks and your dimes, it’s 500, a thousand. And he starts talking about sticks are 100 grand and then a balloon is a million dollars. And like, yeah, I’m starting to bet a couple balloons every game.

Like, yeah, the fact that you’ve got nicknames for your million dollar bets, like, you’re in a whole different class, bro. This guy’s not making five grand a game because again, he mentioned that at, at this point in the thick of it, he’s bringing in like 400k a year as, like, all the different things he’s being compensated and then the extra, like, gambling money. You’re saying that this dude is risking everything on an extra 50, 60 grand a year? Zero chance. Like, this guy had to have been. And it shows. Like, they’re going on vacations. They, like, they got all these nice things.

There’s no way that even 400 is nice. But it’s not how he was living nice. No, I agree. And they, I think they’re trying to hide because they’ve claimed only certain amount of money was made. And I, I was saying that through the whole film, like, there was more money made here that. But again, they got to do what they got to do to keep that money. And then it. It kind of intensifies because now Batista is making all this money. And I’m sure that he has his ties with these mob guys. I don’t know. They don’t go into detail how his ties are.

They even, like, have one of the FB FBI guys kind of explain it, like, where he’s like, yeah, he’s. He’s dining with these guys, but he’s not a made man. Right. He’s never going to be in that inner circle. But I think that from my. This is my own interjection that Batista is probably like, hey, I want to get closer to the inner circle. Let me show you what I can do for you. Right? So what he did was. He was like, now the mob is making these huge bets, and they’re now involved. Well, this is where everything goes haywire, because they’re calling these games.

I think it was a total of what, 45 games that they claim. Again, these are the games that they claim that there may be more involved. But they. He’s. And. And the. Throughout the entire documentary, Tim is like, I did not fix a game. I only gave insider information. And it’s like kind of the same thing. You’re like, dude, like, you knew that this guy was going to call the fouls, and you knew that you’re going to call a foul because you’re going to tell me that at the end of the game. You’re like, oh, man, the Knicks might beat the Jazz.

And I got my money on the Knicks. You’re not going to call that, Tim. You’re going to call that. You’re going to call the foul to make sure the. That save your money. And I think they lost a few just to make it look right. Yes, it may be not a fix by a technical definition, but thumb on the scale. And it was. It was 47 games bet on, and out of those 37, they won the bets on the over, under, whatever, and only 10 they. They lost on. So having a betting average of 75% is definitely an anomaly.

Right? That’s. That’s. Someone’s got their finger on the scale. There’s no way that that is just sheer luck. And this is where it kind of starts turning conspiratorial, because the FBI, the guy that put away Gotti, they. They made sure to keep. He’s like, I put away Gotti, man. You know what I’m saying? Like, he, He. He goes and he’s seen that there’s this contact of Batista contacting with the mob back and forth. They start investigating in the wiretaps. They hear some of the stuff about the gambling. Now Tim and them are on the radar, which not necessarily they were going after Tim, but they wanted to go after the mob.

And I think this was their leverage that they felt that they were going to use to get there. Now everybody’s exposed. Now the FBI is involved. They’re. They’re. They’re starting to grab people. And as they get their investigation going and they get Tim and they get Tommy and they get Batista and they start talking to him, first of all, they all start turning on each other real quick. They were talking about something about their motto was cranberries, which I don’t get it because cranberries are easy to crush. And that’s what happened to them. They crushed on each other real quick.

Or like, it wasn’t me, I was just doing this. It was this guy. And the FBI want heard more. And then you hear Tim talking to the FBI guys and then he’s like, yeah, this goes deeper. This goes into the NBA conspiratorial world, where now they’re saying that, yeah, this is the stuff that the NBA tells us to do. Then he gets into the. The fact of like, yeah, we’re told that certain teams we need to win because it’s a big. It’s the stuff that we all talk about, right? We all have been like, man, I know they want the Lakers to win because it’s a big market.

And you’re like, ah, maybe I’m just crazy. And you’re like, oh, no, you’re not. Because then they even point to one of the worst games. It was a game six, I think in 2002, Lakers versus Sacramento Kings, which this was huge because the Sacramento Kings were up 3, 2 in the series. Everybody thought the Kings were going to beat Lakers dethroned the Lakers, which Sacramento. It’s a much smaller market than la and it was considered one of the worst ref games ever. A lot of calls like, not called, like an elbow from Kobe to Mike Bibby to the face.

No charging calls calling where you’re like, what? That’s a felon, this guy. Like, just absurd things. And then magically the Lakers win and it goes to a Game 7. That’s where Tim starts to go into the NBA, wants them to go to game sevens because it’s more money. And you’re like, duh. Like that makes sense. Of course they’re going to try to make More money. And I think it’s not only the big market teams, but they want them to go to the seven game series because bigger TV contracts, more broadcast time, more commercials played, so on and so forth.

And then there’s certain stars that they want to elevate. They even talk of the FBI guy, talks about how David Stern built a league around stars, and that’s their business model. There’s these five to 10 stars that they want to showcase, and so you treat them differently than you would treat anybody else. So now the FBI guys, like, whoa, maybe you want to wear a wiretap and go get some of this information from these other refs. He mentioned that there were at least 10 other refs involved in this, but that this gambling fixing ring also included owners.

And it included. It was way more than just Tim and a few other guys. Like, he. He got the idea and saw it from other people doing it. This is what he was saying. And at this time, when he brings this up. And again, this all stemmed from Gotti getting busted, right? They’re just going through all of Gotti’s stuff and like, oh, here’s a lead. And all of a sudden, this lead leads to one guy, and that one guy leads to 10 guys. And some of those 10 guys might be owners. And in the middle of this, Stern is renegotiating all of the contracts for broadcast.

It’s in the middle of a $7.4 billion deal, and now he’s getting informed by the FBI, hey, you might have a leak, right? So the way that this documentary, whether intentionally or not, but the way they frame it, is that Donaghy, he becomes the fall guy. He becomes Stern as like, oh, my God. Good news, everyone. Bad news and good news. Bad news is we had a rat. We had a. A bad apple that we found in the bunch. The good news is we found them, we rooted it out, and there’s no more. Any bad things going on in the NBA.

We got it before it got too out of control. All right, let’s move along to the next thing. And the way that he got him taken out is the same way you see, like, Diddy get taken out or Epstein get taken out, or like anyone that becomes the one fall guy that really represents an entire cabal of people doing the same thing as the fall guy did. So I kind of get that feeling, like Donaghy is the fall guy for this thing, and he becomes the face of it. And it’s like, okay, we’re cleaning our hands of that, you know, controversy over not time for the next scandal.

And really, like, there’s still 10 plus guys that are way higher up than this guy that are still doing this right now. Probably way more than the 10 that was just the 10 that he knew about. Exactly. And he doesn’t know the full scale of it. And this is where a major controversial claim is made, because now the FBI is like, whoa, crazy stuff is happening over here. We want to investigate this. And they go and talk to the NBA and kind of let them know. And like you said, they kind of want to just move on.

I’m like, we can’t believe this happened. And then the NBA. Well, somebody leaked the story of the Tim Donaghy. And I think that it’s pretty obvious that it was the NBA because they have the most incentive to leak the story where it changed the narrative. And this was like, a perfect 101 class of marketing of, like, how you change of. Of. What’s it called? PR of where you’re like, you know, you get your publicist. They’re like, we have a bad movement right here. Let’s get ahead of it. Let’s change the narrative. And that’s what they did.

They pushed out Tim Donaghy, this rogue referee, no attachment to anybody else. For some reason, he was betting on games. I don’t know why he was doing that. He knows he’s not supposed to do that and this and that. They threw it all on him. They did not want to go to trial, so they threw this, which threw their whole case out the window. So now you had to just go to just Donaghy when they were setting up a case for the NBA, which would have killed the NBA at the time. Right. This might have put them out of business because it was such bad publicity that people were not going to attend games.

They’re like, everything’s fake. They’re fixing it all, and they’re making millions off of it. Instead, they threw Tim Donaghy to the fire and go handle it. And also they settle that case really quickly. Like, he comes out and like, yeah, all right, 15 months. I’m good to go. Every case is closed. And even Batista, who is very adamant throughout this film that he hates the NBA. Like, he gets pretty amped up when he’s talking about David Stern, because they were giving them certain charges that he’s like, oh, heck no. Racketeering, all this other stuff. And then it goes.

They drop it down just to illegal gambling. And they, like, push him to sign, and he does. And they believe that because now it doesn’t go to trial. There’s no discovery. There’s nothing like no dirty laundry to put out there. We could put this to rest. And in a year or two, the new headline comes in and washes it away. And I. They claim the NBA is like, we would never leak any information like that. And you’re like, dude, it’s like the most obvious thing. Even Tim Donaghy’s lawyer is like, yeah, I can’t say that they did that, but Tim.

It wasn’t in Tim’s best interest. He’s like, it wasn’t in Batista’s best interest. You know what I mean? It wasn’t in the FBI’s best interest. It only worked out for Stern. That was the only person that worked out for. So then from there, it kind of just goes back, and this is where it kind of gets interesting to me, where, like, you know, now they’ve done their time, they’re out of everything. And then even Tim Donaghy, he goes and says, yeah, people might think, like, well, I’m living well off. And I’m like, dude, I was thinking this the whole time because I’m like, these guys just got out of prison.

Federal penitentiary, probably, right? Because this is a federal crime. And I’m like, dang, they got nice houses. They’re, like, dressed nice. They’re. They look better. They’re. Than they did when they were gambling, right? Even the guy Batista was like, dude, I was, like, strung out. I was doing an eight ball a day, popping Oxy’s like crazy. I was super fat. Now I’m in shape. I’m sober. And it looks like he still has money. It looks like Tim still has money. And then they asked him a question. They go, did you really make more money? Like, what if someone asks you of, like, did you make more money than you claimed? And he.

Yeah. And then he’s like, well, I don’t know. He’s like, what to say about it. He’s like. Because, like, maybe. And then they ask him again. He’s like, oh, maybe I misheard you. Maybe I didn’t hear you saying, did you make all that money? I thought you said something else. And he’s like, no, I didn’t. Right at the end. But you’re like, yes, he obviously did. He obviously made way more money. Did you see his house? Did you see how he’s living? He’s not a guy that just like. Take, for example, what we saw from the cocaine quarterback.

That guy really came out of jail, had to go In a halfway house, had to build everything back up. That’s how you come out. Hidden treasures and overboard moments. What do you got on this one? Hidden treasure. I mean, this one delivers on facts. Some of the facts, right? You, you at least get to see this one guy that takes the fall was legitimately fixing games. I don’t know how else to put it, man. He had his finger on the scale. He, he could call a foul on one team and not call a foul on the other team.

And that had. Especially when, when you go back and watch some of these games from this era. These games were being won in the last 10 seconds, right? In the last four, in the last zero, you know, 0.6 seconds. These games were going neck to neck. So one single bad call could absolutely change the trajectory. These games we’re not talking about, he’s making calls and now it’s a blowout. Now it’s 20 to 100. We’re talking, he makes a call and now someone won 102 to 100 or something. So absolutely fixing the games. And it seems to me like crazy how easy it was.

Crazy how long he was able to fly under the radar. The NBA never would have found out or maybe just didn’t have an incentive to find out. The only reason he got caught was because this scheme had somehow bubbled itself up to John Gotti and it got swept into the John Gotti investigation. But other than that, this could have just still been going on, you know what I mean? Like this, this didn’t ever have to stop. It was a fluke that this guy ended up exposing a much deeper thing with the NBA and then the NBA rushed to suppress it all anyways.

Yeah, I don’t think the NBA didn’t know about this. I think in my opinion that’s one of the hidden treasures. Is this documentary kind of shows you what script, what, what do they really mean by scripted and fixing games, right? There is not a script that they go, hey, LeBron’s going to get injured in week three of or game 17 or that’s not what’s really happening. What is happening is that there’s incentives to be like, let’s make sure the Lakers win, let’s make sure we go to seven games. Do what you have to do. And I think it’s easier to fix an NBA game than it is an NFL game, because all you have to.

You could throw flags in the NFL, but you, you can have, you could be down 40 yards and be first and 40 and have a 60 yard touchdown. But in the NBA, after you go over to the foul mark, you get free throws, you get points. You are now controlling the actual points. So it’s not just, oh, I’m calling a foul. You’re, you’re taking people out of games. You get six fouls, you’re out of the game, that changes the game. You’re, you’re, you’re, you change the. If a guy gets four fouls and it’s the second quarter that changes the game.

Now you get people to the free throw line, giving them actual points, that changes the game. That’s truly fixing. And I think the hidden gem is really showing that the NBA did play a hand in this, that this is kind of their model, right? Their model is like, yeah, let’s get the teams and the stars that we want to the games we want. And then that makes sense because if you go through the NBA catalog of the people that have won championships, it’s their biggest stars, it’s the biggest cities, it’s. There’s a lot of the same people.

There’s a reason why the Lakers and the Celtics have the most championships, right? That’s. Those two teams are the catalyst of what got the NBA on the map. Because with the Celtics and Larry Bird versus Magic Johnson is really what started getting the NBA getting paid. So I think the biggest hidden treasure in all this is just really exposing some of the NBA bull crap that was going on and conspiracies that people have been saying for years that kind of like to me brings it truth to light. The, the overboard for me is maybe just this series in general, the Untold, but I mean maybe appropriate for the name.

They leave so much untold. You don’t really get every single extra detail. Like I wanted a follow up when, when they get him on camera and he clearly is caught in like a half truth, that’s slightly. It turns into a lie. That turns into a different answer. I mean you’re the one making the documentary, bro, throw me a little clip. That’s like. We later looked into his finances and here’s what we found. And you don’t necessarily get that from this untold series. I’m not going to hold it as like a strike against it, but it definitely.

It just feels like slightly incomplete. Like they could have taken it just one extra step and really like done an expose versus what kind of feels like a TV show, right? And I guess it is a TV show. So fair and Untold does never tells you the full story. Like they like to leave these clues. Like you’re supposed to be some Internet sleuth detective figuring the rest out. I don’t know if that’s part of like the lure of it, but I think that’s what this series does. And for all the good they do, they do shoot themselves in the foot without resolving.

They leave so much unresolved information that you’re like, okay, so what happened? And they’re like, I don’t know, man. Just check it out. Go, go to Google. All right, it’s about that time. What do you got? Sink or swim. This one, I think hits all my checkbox. So I, I have to give it a swim. For that reason alone. I got to say that it is a TV episode. It’s a, it’s a good one for a documentary TV episode. It maybe is not neck and neck with like truly legendary documentaries, but it is interesting whether or not you like basketball.

And it does. It changes my view of the game forever. Like the, the big one. Whether they’re lying or not. I believe that this happens outside of the specific instance. But when he says that he was basically scolded for calling that foul on Michael Jordan and how everyone acted was like, yeah, of course you’re supposed to call that. Not, not on him, you idiot. You know, like the way that everyone treated him like such an idiot for making that call and that that was the revelation. Like, I believe that that happened and I believe that that still will continue to happen.

And here we’ve got the closest that you’ll get to documentation of an actual. He was a real NBA ref, regardless that he went to jail for 15 months after pleading guilty. But he, he was the ref and he said he did these things. So these things de facto happen. It’s on record. So I, I feel again, anyone that might be on the fence or like, I’m not convinced that, you know, the refs or anyone or the NBA is into fixing their own games. This is one of the closest points of evidence that we’ve got to it in a, in a bite sized package.

I give it a swim all the way too. I just. For the fact that they really highlighted the corruption and conspiratorial aspects of some of these fixing games. And I think it’s a good thing to point to people when they say it’s scripted because I just don’t like the word scripted because I think it throws people off. It’s can be predetermined. It can be like you want a certain outcome because you can change it, right? Like a player can play their. Even though they’re calling these bad calls. There’s some things they can’t control. But, yes, I do feel like it’s a controlled element to really show people, like, this is how they do it.

This is the blueprint. This is how they make millions. They. And then they’re. Not only are they picking the games they want, they’re also gambling on it. And then now it makes sense with all these draftkings and fanduel and everything that you see on every commercial, the gambling goes hand in hand. And you’re like, yeah, well, that’s how the NBA, like, was pretty much the birthplace. And you’re. You’re seeing the forefront of now these players that are getting called out for like, hey, man, he’s doing prop bets on himself. He said he would get less than 10 rebounds and he’s not getting a rebound.

He’s at nine. Right. That you see the beginning stages of all this. So it’s definitely a swim for me. And I think that if you want to stick up to the sports ball, why don’t you go to paranoidamerican.com, go get you some conspiracy trading cards.
