Julian Assange loses US extradition challenge, will renew appeal next week
By, Tommy Truthful
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has faced another setback in his fight against being sent from Britain to the United States. The U.S. wants to charge him with crimes because of the release of secret military documents and diplomatic messages by WikiLeaks.
Even though Assange, who is 51 years old, lost this attempt to stop his extradition, he plans to make another appeal next week. His wife, Stella Assange, said there will be a hearing where he will try to challenge the decision once again.
It’s a complicated legal process, but Julian Assange is determined to keep fighting. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next in this important case.
There are charges against him because WikiLeaks released secret information about war crimes committed by the U.S. government. If he is extradited, it could mean he will spend the rest of his life in a high-security prison.
In January 2021, a judge in Britain said Assange should not be extradited because of concerns about his mental health and the risk of him harming himself if he went to a maximum security prison. But later, after an appeal by U.S. authorities, the decision was changed. They made some promises, like saying he could be transferred to Australia to serve his sentence if he is convicted.
The extradition was approved by the British interior minister in June of last year.
WikiLeaks gained a lot of attention in 2010 when they released many secret files and diplomatic messages. It was a big breach of security in the U.S. military’s history.
It’s a complicated situation, and Julian Assange’s supporters are hopeful that things will work out in his favor. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
